World congress speeds up information flow for vets Hamburg, 2004-02-03

Pigs can be helped more quickly

(IPVS) One of the most important goals of the 18th world congress of pig vets is to ensure that vets are informed about relevant research results considerably more quickly than before. The congress will be held at the end of June by the International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) in Hamburg.

New series of presentations for practical vets

For the first time at the congress, all relevant scientific results will be specifically aimed at practising vets. They will be presented in the "Practitioners' line" series with its motto "Science Meets Practice." IPVS president Henning Bossow hopes that this series of presentations will considerable reduce the time that previously elapsed between the publication of scientific results and their resulting application and use in medical treatments in the sty: "Pigs can be helped more quickly."

Soon a thing of the past: the two year lag between science and practice

It took around two years from the publication of the agent responsible for the pig disease PPE/PIA at the 1994 IPVS Congress in Bangkok to this information being exchanged between scientific institutions and vets in Germany. "We could have provided the correct treatment for PPE pigs much sooner if we had informed the vets immediately and clearly," Bossow, himself a vet, is convinced.

Results of anti-PIA serum as prime example

Although not all scientists and experts have submitted their papers and presentations for the congress yet, it is already clear that the focus for those working in the field will be on one current and significant topic: previously unpublished experience with the application of a serum for the pig disease PIA.
